David Coleman is the ninth president of the College Board. The College Board designs the SAT Reasoning Test (SAT) and the Advanced Placement (AP) tests. The press has described him as "the architect" of the Common Core State Standards Initiative. Coleman was named to the 2013 Time 100, the magazine’s annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world. He has been recognized as one of Time magazine’s “11 Education Activists for 2011” and was one of the NewSchools Venture Fund Change Agents of the Year for 2012. |
THE ARTS ARE LANGUAGE
Theater and music provide a context for exploring descriptive language and poetry, and they lift the spoken or written word to a new level of nuance and expression. All of the arts expand vocabulary, explore world languages, and build the acquisition of language by facilitating reading and the use of symbols.
THE ARTS ARE HISTORY
The fine arts have traditionally stimulated cultural unity and diversity, preserved historical events, and reflected or commented on the most profound thoughts of society.
THE ARTS ARE MATH
The visual arts from painting to sculpture to architecture all follow mathematical principles to define space, balance and structure. Music directly applies mathematical operations to create and define intervals and pitch, pulse and rhythm, melody and harmony, balance and form. Music theory and composition are mathematical as well as artistic processes.
THE ARTS ARE SCIENCE
Music provides real life demonstrations of acoustics and physics. The study of sound - creation, preservation, and transmission all require a fundamental understanding of scientific principles. Two and three dimensional art evolve from a knowledge of color, shape, stress and support, materials and density.
THE ARTS ARE PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Music, theatre, dance, and visual art all require a complex training of muscles, building a repertoire of brain reflexes and muscle memory to sing, to play instruments, and to move, to paint or sculpt effectively. Engaging the brain, the mouth, the hands, and feet all require conditioning and repetition to achieve mastery.
Most important, however, is that the arts teach exploration and experimentation, nuance of thought and idea, and expression and communication - values that make life worth living.
